What Happens When You Wait

Psalm 40:1-4

“I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in Him. Blessed is the one who trust in the Lord, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods.”

David gives us a hidden insight to why others may be afraid of waiting. Sometimes things can get worse before they get better if you end up placing your trust in God and waiting on the Lord.

David said He waited patiently on the Lord. Once God showed up David gives us a picture of what took place. He said God lifted him out of a slimy pit, out of the mud and mire! I think this is the Bible’s way of saying David got himself in some deep you know what while he was waiting on the Lord!

Waiting isn’t a new concept or command that God instructs His people to do. This has been one of His favorite tactics throughout the Bible. Abraham, Jacob, Noah, Joseph, David, The disciples – I could go on and on and on with examples of people that had to wait on the Lord to do what He said He was going to do for them and through them.

Waiting on God can sometimes get ugly! It’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Why wait? If I can make things happen on my own why should I wait on God?

I would suggest waiting because anything you could make happen or you and a billion humans combined could not compare to what God is able to do. David said in verse 3 that God put a new song in his mouth when He showed up. David had to make a new song for what God did because when God acts it’s always supernatural. It will cause you to try and form words to something never before seen on earth. Which means all the songs up to this point won’t honor God enough for what He just did! If you wait on the Lord prepare to sing Him a new song. If you wait on the Lord you will be permitted to experience what eye has not seen or ear has not heard.

Another joy of waiting is you become an automatic testimony to God’s greatness. When others view what takes place in the life of someone who decides to wait on the Lord they begin to fear the Lord and put their trust in Him. When you wait on the Lord your faith in God will ignite faith in others and the result is the conversion of spectators.

Saving someone from their sin is the first step. The next step is now to convert fear into faith. Fearing God and placing trust in Him isn’t an automatic character trait of one who has just accepted Jesus as their savior. I’m not just about getting people saved. I’m about delivering people from their slavery that fear creates. The biggest way to do that is wait on the Lord! Allow God to show up and show out! Once that happens, the spectators will begin to be converted! Fear moves out and faith moves in!

Psalm 40:4 ~ Blessed is the one who trust in the Lord, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods.

Psalm 40:16 ~ May all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who long for your saving help always say, The Lord is great!
